Star Wars Uncut!

You might remember (probably not) about 2 and a half years ago I posted a short piece of animation for a project called Star Wars Uncut. Well, the finished film is finally here! Edited together in all its hand made glory.

I've got to say, it works nicely. Maybe it's just because I know the film back to front but I feel like I can follow what's happening even when the characters are constantly changing shape, age, gender and construction quality. I feel like it says something about the strength of the original film. Something that George Lucas seems to have forgotten how to do since. I'm not going to get into another rant about Lucas here though.

What I will say is congratulations to all those chosen. This is a really cool thing the internet has done!

In case you're interested, my piece shows up at approximately the 13:33 mark and features R2D2 (one of my favourite fictional characters) looking around the inside of a Jawa Sandcrawler.

Useless Doodles about My Life

So hello there. It's been a while since I've posted on here and I'm sure you've all been waiting with baited breath to hear (see?) what I've been doing. Well I thought I'd explain to you what I've been up to in LIFE since my last post through the medium of poorly rendered illustrations! How else can one explain their life?

Well first of all I spent a few days in London at the end of November. A few very expensive days I should point out. London hotels are pricey even when they suck which was a pity I must say. I'm still paying for that trip but I don't really care because it was amazing and totally worth it. It was a great few days of my life with some people who are very important to me. One in particular. Not really directly related to any of my work or art or whatever but I drew a picture of Big Ben from a Google image search so what's the difference really? Exactly.

I've also been posting a lot on Tom and Pals. That's one of my other blogs. It's creepy drawings of famous people, mostly Tom Cruise. I took a huge posting break on it there for about 2 months due to a problem with scanning facilities but I didn't stop drawing and now have a backlog which I'm currently releasing one a day. I've been posting those solidly for 2 weeks and I've still got about a week's worth left to post not including any I may draw in the meantime. It's very likely that I will draw more in the meantime so that's something to check out if you don't already follow it! Oh I also added a Tumblr branch to the Tom and Pals tree so that might be worth a look (and a reblog if you're that way inclined.)

I've also been reading a lot of Batman books recently. That's neither here nor there really. I just dig that guy. If you haven't heard of it he's basically a bloke who dresses like a giant bat and punches people. There's more to it than that but you get the idea. It's kind of underground. Whatever. I'm over it. Next question.

I've been watching a lot of Star Trek: The Next Generation recently. This is a ridiculous thing to announce in any walk of life. Blog or otherwise. Even on a Star Trek blog it would be a ridiculous thing to announce as there hasn't been a new episode since 1994. It's not relevant but it's the truth and you came here for the truth (no you didn't) so you can just deal with it. Check out Worf's forehead there. It looks like a Mars bar kind of.

I've been working on a seeeecret webcoooomic for a while too. I've plenty of entries written, drawn, scanned and ready to go. I just need to figure out a webpage format for it. Might take a while. What could it be about!? What indeed?! Maybe there's a clue in this blog post!? Maybe not?! I can definitely tell you that there is or isn't a clue in this blog post. That's a promise I CAN make! I wouldn't get too worked up about it anyway. You probably won't like it. I like writing and drawing it though so that's why I do it. That's just how I roll man! That's just the way I do it.

Something I have been updating pretty regularly is my one sentence film review blog. Not a lot to say really except give it a look and see what I've been thinking of the old and new films I've seen recently. Some are great and some aren't. Weird.

I haven't posted to Cinewaffle for a while now but it was never really made to be a crazy regular thing. Who knows, I might have something to rant about soon? I have a couple of ideas actually so keep your eye on it. Or read the ones that are already there if you haven't already. Even if you have, read them again. Why not eh?! Eh?!?!

I'm moving out to Galway soon so that's exciting. I've got work to do out there. Should be there a while so yes. Look at me being all animatey in real life. How is that even possible you ask. I don't know. I just don't know but does it matter? Does any of it really matter?!? Yes. Yes some of it does but either way, I'm moving to Galway. So there's that.

Oh yeah and I figured I'd mention that I found this recently. This is humorous but also cool I guess. How ridiculous though.

The Amazing Few DVD

So I've mentioned The Amazing Few a couple of times on this blog.

This is the pinnacle though. The Amazing Few have a live DVD out and I did a bunch of stuff on it. They'll be selling it at their show tomorrow (Saturday 6th) and you should definitely come along and dance with me and buy a copy. It's a great DVD with colours and fun and what not. Also my animation's in there so you can't lose right? RIGHT?!

Anyway, the gig is called the Throwing Shapes Show and it's certain to feature new animation by me, including the image above probably. As well as others. That's a loada shapes!

Tom and Pals

I've just started a new blog of weird celebrity (mostly Tom Cruise) drawings called Tom and Pals. I did a load of these recently and had a lot of fun with them. I'm hoping to do more. Don't ask me why. I thought it'd be a good idea to make a separate blog for them rather than just post them here. It'll avoid this blog feeling repetitive and will motivate me to make more of them... I reckon anyway.

Currently I've a small back up of them to post but I should get going on some new ones soon too. Do enjoy!

I recently made these 3 images of my own face in Photoshop.

I initially made the first one just for my Facebook profile as I was bored with what was already there. Later on I made the second one and now the third, mostly because I'd shaved and the first one no longer looked like me.

The second 2 have a similar approach in that I took a photo of myself and then layered over it with the polygonal lasso in Photoshop. It gave me some nice angular shapes. I wanted to follow my face but not precisely. I like the effect that came out.

The colours are just my usual thing. Something about drawing over my face in black and white appeals to me...

The Amazing Few's 3D New Year's Eve Show

The Amazing Few just posted a video of a few highlights from their 3D New Year's extravaganza show. The video is full of animation from me in magical 3D!! Ooooohh!

I had a lot of fun working on this and look forward to working with these guys again. If you ever see an Amazing Few gig coming up, I suggest you go. They're always great fun and usually feature plenty of animation from yours truly.

This video isn't new but I felt it should get mentioned up here.
The Amazing Few are a Dublin based Ska/Punk/Psychobilly/Fun type band who are great. I've done a few bits of animation for them over the last year or so, I've been asked to do a bit more for their upcoming show.

I thought I'd show you this live video of their song 'Bruce Lee Movie' from their upcoming live DVD. The projections behind the band were designed and animated by me.

New Volta

For some stupid reason it didn't occur to me to post about New Volta until now.

New Volta is a film screening club that's just emerged in Dublin run by Bob Gallagher. The intent is to hold a monthly screening of shorts made by just about anyone, as festival circuits can be difficult to get on.
Today's was in Bewley's on Grafton St. and went very well. My graduate film DABDA was screened along with others. New Volta should be returning on the first Tuesday of every month from now on.

Star Wars Uncut

I got a link to the site Star Wars Uncut a while ago and figured I'd give one a try. What they've done is chopped up A New Hope into 15 second segments and doled them out to whomever wants to recreate them.
I think it's an idea that has some potential and hopefully the end result will be kind of cool and have an interesting flow to it.
Anyway here's my 15 seconds:

PS. They're going by the 2004 version of the film unfortunately, I can't always have my way. I'm hoping the nerds will shine through and either remove the glaring extras or at least mock them.

Galway Film Fleadh!

The Galway Film Fleadh is upon us! My short film DABDA is screening on Sunday and I am excited that people will be seeing it.
Unfortunately I won't be able to be there but I hope that people enjoy it.

OJ Meets Letterman

I made this as my first project in third year animation in IADT. The brief was to choose a current news article and create a response to it. Created with a mixture of Adobe Flash and Photoshop. The heads are cut from photos, some are modified slightly. The rest was drawn in either Flash or Photoshop. Then animated in Flash.

College Life

This was a project for my third year studying animation at IADT. The brief was to create 3 short vignettes to be shown to a new student at the college, each of them teaching or explaining something about life around the campus.
Created almost entirely in Adobe Flash. The backgrounds were photographed and then traced in Flash. A few small parts were created with filters in Adobe Photoshop.

Flim

I made this last year as my final film of third year animation. It's a music video of sorts to an abridged version of Flim by Aphex Twin.
It was created by animating in Adobe Flash using a mixture of tweening and frame by frame. The textures were then placed in Flash using the mask options and the shadows were placed in Adobe After Effects.

Galway Film Fleadh

I just found out today that my graduate film has been accepted into the Galway Film Fleadh under the Debut Short category. Needless to say I am flippin' happy about this! Should you be attending the festival, please look out for my film DABDA.

Here's a hi-res image of the character of The Figure from my final year film: DABDA.

This was created by first photographing the actor's face, then tracing over the important features in Flash and combining them with original drawings. I then brought the Flash drawing into After Effects and applied the previously scanned ink textures.

When in motion, the lower half of the body is constantly shifting the Rorschach pattern. The texture of the body is boiling as well, in order to create something of an atmosphere of impossibly perfect cutout animation. Of course I never intended the viewer to think it might actually be cutout.
